We’re investing in an important water mains renewal project along Tonbridge Road and Camp Hill in Chiddingstone to secure safe and reliable drinking water supplies for homes and businesses.

The current water mains, which are from 1974, have now reached the end of their operational life.

The project will involve laying approximately 1.5km of new main along Tonbridge Road and part of Camp Hill, starting from the junction of Hampkins Hill Road. Our Keeping your water flowing(External link) booklet explains the four stages needed to lay a water main and answers some key questions you may have.

*See latest update below for further information*

We’re starting work to replace an old water main in Tonbridge Road and Camp Hill, Chiddingstone, on Tuesday 19 April.

This work was originally paused after discussions with businesses, stakeholders and residents. We have since done a lot of work and changed techniques, meaning we can work closer to the verge in Tonbridge Road and under traffic lights, rather than a full road closure.

Once this section is completed, we’ll be moving on to Camp Hill where we’ll need to put a full road closure in place. We’re expecting to start this section on Monday 20 June once we have completed work on Tonbridge Road.

We want to assure you we will keep the disruption caused to the local community to a minimum.

  • Share Will you be able to open tonbridge road earlier on one side of the road and manage traffic through traffic lights? This is the longest road closure i have ever seen in this area with the longest diversion possible. It would great to have more flexibility on the road closures and reduce impact on people. on Facebook Share Will you be able to open tonbridge road earlier on one side of the road and manage traffic through traffic lights? Hi, thank you for your message. At this time, the road closure will stay in place for the duration of the scheme. We will however review this on a regular basis to ensure we are not causing any unnecessary disruption. The diversion route chosen accommodates all vehicles. When we close a road we need to provide a like for like diversion route e.g. we have closed a B road so our diversion needs to be along B roads. However, there may be alternative quicker routes within the diversion that can be used.

Thank you for your message. Access will be maintained to properties within the closure at all times. This may mean delivery drivers will need to follow the diversion to get to your property, so please include this on any delivery instructions. Postal deliveries will continue as normal.

SFOC asked over 2 years ago

Hi, thank you for your message. We will maintain a hard closure (no access permitted) at one end of the works at all times. Currently this is the Hampkins Hill Road end of the scheme with access being maintained at the Camp Hill end. This will change as the mains laying progresses along the road and will be updated on our website as and when it happens. Alternatively, please feel free to speak to the team on site who will do their best to accommodate your access needs.

Hi, thank you for your message. There is only one diversion route, as advertised on this site. If you are travelling from Bough Beech you just need to follow it the other direction.

Hi, thank you for your message. We have added two maps on the site (under 'Documents') which show the exact stretches of road that will be closed for these works. The red line on the map indicates this. We hope this helps give more clarity on where we will be working.

Hi, thank you for your message. All businesses impacted by these works will be informed the early part of next week (two weeks in advance of the works starting), which is in line with all of our timescales for all mains replacement schemes.
